Luke Tipene, a 17-year-old contracted to the New Zealand Warriors, died just after midnight outside a Grey Lynn house.
Police were yet to officially release his name but next of kin have been informed. They have launched a homicide investigation.

Tipene was a member of the New Zealand 16s side last year and the captain of the Akarana side that won the New Zealand national 17s competition this year.
Tipene had come through the Warriors development system and had been contracted to the team’s National Youth Cup (under 20s) squad next season.
